Tennis Training Games and Tips for Ambitious Coaches Players and Parents Terry Geurkink 9780980223798 Books Reviews
I need specifiic training ideas for my team practices, and this book has plenty of specifics. The "Coaching Tips" are really good---they zero in on important concepts to concentrate on. The "Players' Tips" will benefit some of my players---I am going to encourage them to read it. We have some pushy parents, and I am going to suggest they read the book for the sections written just for them.
I would recommend this to all high school coaches, not just Tennis coaches. I found the chapters in the book referring to maximizing the actual competitive practice time of the athlete to be eye opening. Most coaches have never really thought about this, whereas the author has given this a great deal of thought and provides many actionable examples. He's devised many competitive drills that eliminate wasted practice time, replacing it with valuable competition that draws the most effort and provides a measurement of improvement while allowing the
athlete to compete. As a high school ski coach I plan to improve my coaching by applying these ideas into our practices.

This gem of a tennis training book goes way beyond the expected instructional tips suggested by the book title. Perspectives on coaching, playing and parenting are nicely blended into the readable text for developing tennis players. Clearly, tennis is a simple yet complex sport that offers a lifetime of enjoyment and challenge. Terry understands and communicates the developing stages young players move through with the goal to not only perform at a high level but also to enjoy the sport. In particular, I really liked Terry's emphasis on learning how to play and to coach correctly and to have fun and stay positive. There are a series of do and don'ts for parents of developing tennis players that resonated with me. For over 40 years I worked as a school administrator in some excellent tennis supporting communities and I have had opportunities to hire many coaches over the years. I would look for the characteristics emphasized in this book in my responsibility to hire coaches who were good for kids and good for athletics. As a final side-note, I found suggestions in this book to improve my own tennis skills and considering that my age is just north of 65 that is yet another reason to start young players out right on their tennis journey. Check out this book. It will up your game and/or help you help someone else be a better tennis player.
This book emphasizes strategies based on sound motor learning principles. It is practical and easy to apply to any sport or activity involving development of motor skills. Embedding practice into functional play facilitates learning and skill development as well as keeps individuals motivated to persevere at skill development. It is an excellent resource for anyone teaching sports or motor skills to children and adults.
