What bloggers are saying about The Naked Gardener
This is a quick read and I’d recommend it for the lovely descriptions of the garden and the surprises that happen on the adventurous canoe ride.
The characters are appealing, both as individuals and as a group, and I was quickly pulled into their story. 4 strong stars- a great way to ring in the new year!
"I would hands down read anything that L. B. Gschwandtner writes."
"I enjoyed the book, and would recommend it. Now, whenever I see a garden, I’ll probably think, 'That chick from The Naked Gardner book would be in the buff here.'"
"...the book surprised me in such a great way. Both the writing style combined with the interests and the voice of the book’s main character, Katelyn, spoke to me in a way that seemed incredibly close to life. Within the first few chapters I began to wonder if I was really reading fiction or if I was somehow mistaken and reading non-fiction instead. I even went so far to check the back of the book and online as well. It was indeed fiction and this really impressed me. One of the things I enjoyed most at the beginning of the novel was the description of gardening and Katelyn’s summer home. The gardening scenes reminded me much of both my mother and grandmother in their own gardens (okay, leave out the naked part, and there you go). However, as the book continued and Katelyn’s group of friends went on a weekend-long canoe trip this burst of reality came to life on a whole new level for me. The conversations these women have and their reactions to each other were yet again faithful to the way (I believe) many women actually act in real life."
"... the novel is not really about gardening naked; it is about the freedom to make the choices that drive our lives."
"I thought The Naked Gardener was a satisfying read with an underlying female empowerment theme. It left me feeling grateful for the circle of female friends I have and desiring a girls’ weekend with them (although perhaps not canoeing!) I would not hesitate to recommend The Naked Gardener as a subtle, yet fulfilling, read."
In her first novel, award winning writer L B Gschwandtner explores the push and pull of love, a woman’s need to maintain her individuality within marriage, and the bonds that can make women stronger even when the world feels as if it’s breaking apart.

A delightful read. The Naked Gardener is about Katelyn, a woman who struggles to decide what she wants from her relationship with her lover, Maze, and how she wants to live her life. The book is beautifully written and rich with vivid details that bring the setting and the characters to life. Author L.B. Gschwandtner gives us plenty of backstory on Katelyn, but it's done so skillfully, with bits here and bits there, that the story keeps moving forward as it should.Katelyn is an artist who lives on a Vermont farm with Maze. Katelyn is acquainted with five women from the nearby village. When the women decide to save the village from a gradual drifting into nothingness, Katelyn suggests a canoe trip on the river to make plans for the town's future. The canoe trip brings the women together in a way none of them could ever have anticipated. By the end of the three days on the river, each of them has changed, Katelyn most of all, though she is the one who most feared change. At the end, perhaps because Katelyn sees herself in a different way and is no longer so closed off, she is able to look at Maze and see a side of him she never noticed. The ending is subtle, but it satisfies.

The Naked Gardener edition by L B Gschwandtner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
At some point in our lives, we all come to that proverbial fork in the road where we must make a decision that impacts our lives forever. This story is about one such decision and how it impacted Katelyn's life.
I loved the easy manner in which the story was told, and the journey of self-discovery that Katelyn and her friends took while canoeing down the river. Sometimes the most telling moments are the ones not planned.
Incredible voice, awesome talent.
I think it was written beautifully and the author is very talented. The descriptions are absolutely wonderful and you feel like you are there looking at the garden and anything else described. The author really has a way with words and writes poetically but I think the book is totally boring and uninteresting.
I read books that are not in my normal genre that I totally enjoyed because there was something to hold my interest and that's just not the case for this book.
I disagree with the low star ratings of this book. I can see how this would not appeal to everyone, but personally, I thought it was an example of literary prowess and intelligent writing. I liked the way the story unfolded and thought the author did a good job of giving the reader a view of the inner workings of the mind of the main character. I thought this was an easy read from the beginning that kept me turning pages. In the end, I was glad that I read it and would encourage others to do so as well.
I was fortunate enough to get The Naked Gardener free on my kindle. I have so many books I never know which one to read next. But the title and description hooked me so I made it my next up immediately. I am so glad I did. I fell in love with the author's style within two pages and each page drew me deeper into the story. Her descriptions are so vivid, so vital that I experienced each location, each flower, every emotion. The characters could have been my best friend, my college roommate, my sister, or my mom. The characters could have been me. They are all in different phases of life that every woman can relate too. You will cheer for them, cry with them, and become empowered right along with them. Enjoy!
I forget how I found the book, burn it was probably searching through titles for some purpose or another. I admit, I was drawn by the title and the cover drawing. Once I started it, though, I liked it for the writing. The author addresses the problem of the creative, educated person whose skills and interests do not easily fit into the hustling commercial world. There is also a good deal about the pervasive problem of midlife in our age when we reach the age when we face our last chance to make the big commitments, how do we know we'll pick the right ones? The main character's personal dilemmas take place on the fringe of a dying New England town that perhaps COULD be saved but by whom, and at what cost? The artist (or any creative person) is always torn between the need to do her work and the needs of those of her community.
I liked the river voyage and the scene where the artist and her friends experiment with body paints. My only complaint is that the subplot of the dying town wraps up too easily. If it were that simple, someone would have already fixed the problem (and I know from my own life that such activism takes years of agonizing frustration). Still, the story is framed in such a way that the plot must be resolved by the end of the summer.
I really liked this book.
The heroine enjoys gardening in the nude. Not even her lover knows about her habit, but losing her clothes and getting in touch with the earth is satisfying to Katelyn. Especially when she's so insecure in her relationship with him.
When Katelyn suggests a canoe trip to five other women with their own problems, she doesn't intend it to be a catalyst for change, only for reflection. But as they make their way back to civilization each woman works on her problems, Katelyn most of all. The ending seemed a little tame. Until I kept reading on to the real ending. And it was great.
I expected another women/friendship book, but this was much more. The writing is lyrical. I not only saw Katelyn's love for the land and nature, I shared it. I not only watched her go over the rapids, I was there. And I'm not an outdoorsy person.
Really good book.
